Almost a week post-op

Somehow it's been almost a week since I had surgery. I'm taking my physical therapist's advice to heart that my training right now is to "aggressively rest" so this will be short and I'll continue to tell the story over the next few days.

I'll lead with, as Anna mentioned, I am in minimal pain. I came home Friday with no prescriptions at all and have had to take minimal acetaminophen even. I'll talk more about that in a different post. But I do have reasonably limited range of motion, and typing is pretty uncomfortable.

I have drains inserted to allow fluid to drain out of me: as it was explained to me, the body makes fluid to fill the space left behind. The amount of fluid is tapering off now and I should be able to have them removed in the next day or two. This will improve my mobility a lot, but I won't be able to lift anything for another 5 weeks.

Stephen has been totally amazing but he's looking tired. I called in a favor for dinner tonight (thanks Beck!) and Alec is taking me to get my hair properly washed on Friday. Good god does it need it.

The single issue I've had is an allergic reaction to the tape. I knew I was allergic to adhesive, but had never had a problem with paper tape. I told my surgeon this and she was great working around this, avoiding the usual SteriStrips over the wounds and using paper tape in a few places. And I learned this week that I am actually NOT fine with paper tape and my mid-section is a mess. She was horribly apologetic but I was the one who gave her the explicit go-ahead there, so I see no fault. I've been Benadryling and trying not to scratch ever since, but at least the spots that are bad are not near incisions.

In any case, just popping in to say I am alive and well, and feeling great on this side of things. More soon. Time to aggressively rest.
